Can I colour the world today?
Erase all the colours that are already made
And start again?

I’ll start with red.

Who can I colour red?

I’ll colour all the lovers
In their whispering passions
Then watch as the red of adoration
Becomes the red of anger
So much hotter and true
Than that of simple love.

Maybe I should try yellow.

Who can I colour yellow?

I’ll colour all the happy people
In their smiles and laughter
Then watch as the yellow of joy
Becomes the yellow of pride
Pride that they are much happier
Than the rest of the world.

I’ll colour with green.

Who can I colour green?

I’ll colour all the calm ones
In their relaxed lives
Then watch as the green of tranquillity
Becomes the green of envy
Envy that their lives are so boring
Compared to others.

Blue. I can’t go wrong with blue.

Who can I colour blue?

I’ll colour all the serene dreamers
In their existence above our world
Then watch as the blue of detachment
Becomes the blue of sadness
Sadness that they cannot feel
As those below them do.

Maybe I’ll try and colour white.

Who can I colour white?

I’ll colour all the children
In their innocence not yet tainted
Then watch as the white of naivety
Becomes the white of emptiness
Emptiness that they have not felt
Anything worth feeling.

I’ll colour in with black.
Who can I colour black?

I’ll colour in all those in hiding
In their mysterious acts and masks
Then watch as the black of privacy
Becomes the black of loneliness
Loneliness that they cannot reveal themselves
To anyone who cares.

Maybe I’ll stick with a pencil.
Just a grey, ordinary pencil.

Who can I colour in with grey?

Grey is the colour between all the rest.
Maybe I can find something to colour with grey.
Something that won’t go wrong.
Something that can feel everything and nothing at once.
That’s it!

I can colour the world.
